Dewey
Dewey, in The Quest For Certainty ([1929] 1980), suggests that the history of western philosophy might be read as the history of an attempt to establish absolute certainty in nature, where no such certainty is given to our experience. It is a record of attempts to abolish, to deny the existence of, the changing and the uncertain. Traditionally, he notes, philosophers have posited a hierarchical bifurcation between chance and certainty, change and permanence. At times they have even denied the reality of chance and change.
